Paint over wood paneling – Some homeowners think they are doomed when you want to update the dark, dingy paneled room. Paint over wood paneling, remove all hardware attached to the panels, outlet covers and switch plates with a screwdriver. Tape the screws on the back of each of these covers using painters tape. This will prevent them from getting lost during the painting process. Lightly sand all the colored panels with a power sander on low, using fine-grit sandpaper. Wipe off the dust created from sanding with a clean cloth. Place the painter tape along some areas of the panel limits, such as roofs, floors or abutting cabinet.

There is a choice to be made at paint over wood paneling, with respect to the finished product. If you like a rustic look and do not mind the indents between the panels to show through the color, you are ready to proceed with the painting on this point. If you prefer an even look, with little or no exposure to those indents, there is one more step to take before painting.
